Improve Your Home's Efficiency with Energy-saving Windows
by Sally ClarkHome Remodeling Guide Columnist
The U.S. Department of Energy reports that the energy lost through windows can account for as much as 25 percent of your heating bill. These tips from the Department of Energy can help you improve the energy efficiency of your home's windows.
These tips represent low cost solutions in addition to those that may require a minimal financial investment. These investments can pay off over the long-term, however, by reducing your energy costs. Here's what you can do to achieve a more energy efficient home.
Replace Single-paned Windows
Almost half of all U.S. homes are fitted with single-pane windows. Replace them with double-pane windows with high-performance glass (that is, low-e or spectrally selective). For Cold Climates, Install Windows with Low-e Coatings
Low emissivity (or low-e) window pane coatings reduce the amount of heat given off by radiation. Using these windows will improve efficiency by reducing heat loss.If you live in a cold area, it's also a good idea to keep your shades open during the day and closed at night. Another cheap tip for improving energy efficiency in cold climates is to keep south-facing windows clean to maximize solar gain.
For Warm Climates, Select Windows with Spectrally Selective Coatings
This type of window glazing blocks the infrared portion of sunlight while admitting the visible portion. Spectrally selective coatings enhance energy efficiency by allowing the sun to shine into your house without your house heating up.Inexpensive tips for warm climates include installing white window shades to reflect heat, keeping curtains closed during the day, and installing awnings on south and west-facing windows.
Look For a Low U-value
The U-value refers to how well heat flows through an object. Windows with lower values promote energy efficiency because they are better insulated. A U-value of .35 or less is recommended for cold climates.Follow these tips and you'll be on your way to improving your home's energy efficiency and reducing energy costs.
